new TV
I bought a new TV yesterday. It was kind of inevitable that I'd trade in the old CRT for an HDTV of some sort at some point, but I guess the PS3 was the tipping point. It just didn't make sense to have both a Blu-Ray and HD-DVD player in the apartment, and not have a decent HDTV. I got a 32" LG from Best Buy. It's this model. It works great with the PS3, but that's the only device I have hooked up via HDMI at this point. I only had one HDMI cable in the apartment, and I didn't want to pay Best Buy's price for HDMI cables. Instead, I ordered some from MonoPrice. When they arrive, I'll be able to hook up the HD-DVD also.
Alas, there's not much I can do with the cable box / Tivo combination. That's composite at best. I can get a new HD cable box from Cablevision, but that's probably not going to do me much good unless I trade up to an HD DVR, which I'm really not ready to do yet.
The Wii can't do HDMI, but I can trade up from composite to component, which my friend tells me is worthwhile. I should have ordered a Wii component cable set from Monoprice when I ordered the HDMI cables from them, but I didn't think of it until after I'd placed the order. Looking around, it does seem that Wii component cables are nearly as overpriced as HDMI cables -- $6 from Monoprice, $30 elsewhere.
I'm also thinking about getting an antenna, so I can pick up over-the-air HDTV. Antennas are cheap enough, though I'm not sure how well they'll work here in Somerville. We're basically too far from both New York and Philly to pick up regular TV or radio stations from either market without some grief, but I'm hoping I'll be able to pick up a few stations with a good antenna.

Wii batteries
The batteries in my Wiimote finally died after almost exactly one month of use. I replaced them with a set of rechargeables that I picked up a couple of weeks back. Hopefully, the rechargeables will last for a while.

Wii games
After telling myself repeatedly that I do NOT have time for Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, hence I should NOT buy it, I went out and bought it today. And Super Swing Golf, which I probably *do* have time to play, and looks like it'll be pretty weird. That's probably all the Wii games I'll be buying for the foreseeable future. I hope.

Weird Wii Stories
Wow, am I the only one who managed to buy a Wii without any drama? Kotaku has a bit on a CNN reporter who supposedly had a bit of a problem getting a Wii, and the comments on Kotaku would indicate that a number of other people are still jumping through hoops and going a bit nuts about the whole thing. Honestly, when I bought mine a couple of weeks ago, I just walked into the Times Square Toys R Us, picked up a Wii, waited in line, paid for it, and walked out of the store, no problem. Everyone in line was civilized. It didn't take more that a half-hour.

Slashdot on Wii
There's an interesting review of the Wii on Slashdot. Lots of interesting stuff in the comments, too, in amongst the usual slashdot weirdness. The review has got me interested in picking up Rayman Raving Rabbids, which I was already somewhat curious about.
(Meanwhile, I'm *still* hooked on Wii Sports Tennis...)

yet more Wii stuff
I feel a little silly for posting so much Wii-related stuff over the last couple of weeks, but not silly enough to stop doing it, apparently.

Retro controller adapters
These retro controller adapters for Wii will let you use old NES and SNES controllers on the Wii, for a more authentic experience on virtual console games.

Wii Accessories
CNet has a bit on must-have Wii accessories. They probably have a point about rechargeable batteries being a "must-have".

more Wii news
It looks like some new games were released for Virtual Console yesterday. I read somewhere that they'd be releasing VC games every Monday until the end of the year. I'm not sure if that's true, but yesterday was Monday, so maybe it is.

Wii Points
I just noticed that 2000-point Wii cards seem to be selling for $25 instead of $20. (See Walmart and Amazon for examples.) That's pretty weird, when you can just add 2000 points directly on the Wii for $20 with a credit card. I guess there needs to be room for retailer profit? Still weird. Why would anyone pay that extra five bucks?

Wii Virtual Console - Zelda
Well, I went ahead and bought the virtual console version of Legend of Zelda for the Wii. It's relatively painless to buy and download games from the Wii store, and it's pretty easy to bring them up and play them. One thing that would be nice: a PDF version of the manual, so I could print it out and have it handy while I'm playing. I think the VC games will largely be interesting as novelties, rather than games that I'd really want to spend a lot of time playing. Some of those old games are pretty cool, though some of the best ones aren't up at the store yet.
Meanwhile, I've been playing a lot of Wii Sports tennis. I'll probably get tired of it at some point, but for now, it's a lot of fun. I wouldn't really call it a workout, but it's definitely more physical work than the average video game.

Wii Virtual Console
I bought 2000 Wii points today (aka $20) to use on "virtual console" games. I've got this strange desire to try out the original Legend of Zelda. And maybe a couple of Mario-related games.

Wii Games
Well, I've spent a few minutes playing Cars and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz on the Wii. Cars is kind of disappointing. The only use it really makes of the Wii remote is for steering, and it doesn't seem to work real well for that. I'll have to give it some more time and see if I get any better at it. SMB, on the other hand, makes pretty good use of the remote. And any game where you're controlling a monkey in a plastic bubble has got to be good, right?

Nintendo Wii
I bought a Wii yesterday. I wasn't really planning to get one, but I was Christmas shopping at the Times Square Toys R Us, and they had a bunch of them, so I just picked one up. I figured that if I didn't like it, it'd be easy enough to get rid of, either on eBay or to someone at work. I've only had a chance to play with it a bit today, but so far, I like it. The controller is pretty easy to use and intuitive under Wii Sports. I haven't tried any other games yet.
This page at ComputerWorld has a good round-up of opinions on the Wii from around the web.
